Lattice Structures

Imagine a combination of technological innovation and mechanisms that simulate the perfection of nature

Lattice structures

Lattice Structures have been applied in fields such as aerospace since the 70s.

These structures can be classified into various fields such as cellular solids, architected materials, TPMS, metamaterials, etc. All these structures have in common a repeatability in space  and a high topological complexity. Today the lattice structures are among the most promising methodologies for the present and for the future thanks to the last generation additive technologies, to the increased knowledge and to the implementation of new tools. This technique is the only one that allows taking the designed geometry to a new definition level. At the moment, it can be used at best only for additive technologies, opening the possibility to work not only in the macro space but also in 3D meso-space.

Nature has always been the principal source of inspiration for engineering. Evermore man tries to emulate it for two main reasons: to reach levels of maximum optimization through complex forms and understand the mechanism of operation.

Lattice structures – cellular materials – architected materials – are the highest level of definition we can engineer to change properties of the component, without involving nanotechnologies and the atomic composition of the material.

Engineering lattice structures is complex, and we are still a long way to have general and absolute guidelines, that can be applied to all technologies and materials.
